WHAT IS CBD AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of at least 100 chemical compounds, referred to as cannabinoids, unique to the cannabis sativa or hemp plant. CBD is non psychoactive, and has been shown to offer a number of wellness benefits without the “high” effect of other cannabinoids such as THC. CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a complex signaling network within the bodies of all mammals that functions as a lock and key mechanism when cannabinoids are introduced into the bloodstream. ECS receptors are present throughout the body, and are the reason why CBD can have such diverse and profound effects. We recommend that you consult with your healthcare or veterinary professional and do your own research to determine if CBD is right for you or your pets. ProjectCBD.org is a useful resource for links to information and studies. We also invite you to visit our website LEARN page for relevant features and information.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CBD AND THC?
Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is the chemical compound most commonly associated with marijuana. It’s the chemical that causes the “high”, among other effects, when consumed. Conversely, CBD is non psychoactive, and studies and experiential reports suggest that appropriate delivery of CBD could have potentially profound beneficial and therapeutic effects. All Trove LLC products are designed and manufactured using pure CBD to target specific results and systems support for people, dogs, cats, and horses.
HOW DO I DETERMINE THE APPROPRIATE DOSAGE?
Studies and experiential reports indicate therapeutic effects of CBD between 0.25-0.5 mg CBD per kg of the user’s body weight taken once or twice daily. We recommend consulting with your healthcare or veterinary professional prior to adding any CBD supplement and to determine the appropriate dosage for you and your pets.
WILL USING CBD RESULT IN A FAILED DRUG TEST?
All of our products are derived from pure CBD. This means that our products do not contain any detectable amount of THC. However, we cannot say or guarantee that use of our products will comply with specific drug rules, or that you or your show animal will pass a drug test. We recommend that you consult with your healthcare professional, employer, veterinarian, show management, and/or regulatory body if this is a concern.
DOES CBD INTERACT WITH OTHER PERSCRIPTION DRUGS?
Yes, CBD may interact with certain pharmaceuticals thereby potentially affecting the metabolism/effects of these drugs. Our best reference is the list of possible drug-drug interactions identified with the only FDA -approved CBD drug(Epidiolex) that is prescribed for specific types of seizure disorders in humans (see https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6678684/).
CAN TROVE CBD HELP WITH SLEEP?
We have seen that Trove CBD Oil 750 helps many people find restful and restorative sleep. Very pleasant to take, too, available in natural (hint of coconut)or with added essential oil of lemon or peppermint. Of course, you should check with your healthcare provider prior to starting any new supplement, but we recommend 1/2 dropper under the tongue before bed or added to a bedtime beverage. We also suggest topical application of Trove CBD Body Balm 750to any specific areas of pain or inflammation (neck, back, knees, etc.) for targeted relief if nagging soreness is contributing to interrupted sleep.
IS CBD SAFE FOR ME? WHAT ABOUT MY ANIMALS?
Studies have shown that CBD has an extremely low toxicity level. However, we cannot say that CBD will help or be well tolerated by you or your pets. Please consult with your healthcare or veterinary professional before adding any CBD supplement to your or your pets’ daily regimen.
CAN I RETURN A PRODUCT IF I DO NOT LIKE IT?
Yes! If the Trove product you received doesn’t meet your expectations, you can send it back. Just make sure it is received by us within 30 days of delivery, and we will be happy to exchange it or refund your purchase in full. For more information on returns, refunds, or exchanges, please see our policy for PRODUCT RETURNS.
WHAT IF MY ANIMAL DOESN’T LIKE PILLS?
Trove CBD capsules are water soluble and vegetarian, so they will dissolve when mixed into moistened feed. Or you may separate the capsules and add the contained powder directly to their feed. Also, one of our ingestible CBD oil products may be more to their liking, and can be administered directly into the mouth, or added to food or treats.
IS TROVE "SHOW LEGAL"?
CBD is not currently a permitted substance for horses in competition per USEF and FEI. In 2019, the U.S. Equestrian Federation, which sets the rules for most of the country’s competitive horse events, announced an explicit ban on CBD for horses in competition, noting that"...cannabinoids have gained increased attention and have become nearly mainstream." The rulemaking body said that a horse testing positive for CBD would violate competition rules because the cannabinoid is “likely to [affect] the performance of a horse due to its reported anxiolytic effects,” referring to the compound’s apparent role in reducing anxiety. The body that governs international competitions of many equestrian disciplines, the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), also currently disallows use of CBD for horses in FEI competitions.
Studies are currently underway, including at Colorado State University and Texas A&M to determine (among other things) withdrawal/elimination times for CBD in horses. We anticipate results to be published mid-2021, and are very hopeful that this will provide some concrete guidance for all of us who compete. You can learn more about this in our blog article on the "LEARN" section of the Trove website: https://trovecbd.com/blogs/news/a-primer-on-cbd-for-horses.
Currently, for riders (human athletes subject to WADA testing): per WADA, all natural and synthetic cannabinoids are prohibited, except for cannabidiol (CBD). Many CBD products extracted from hemp also contain THC and other prohibited cannabinoids. However, all Trove products are formulated with pure CBD extract, are THC free, free of other unwanted cannabinoids, and are triple tested to assure purity, concentration and consistency. So riders subject to strict WADA requirements can use all Trove ingestible or topical wellness products.
We always recommend that you check specifically with relevant governing bodies, TDs, and show management as the rules relating to prohibited substances are subject to change and interpretation.
In addition, there are many horses outside of the competition arena that may greatly benefit from the diverse benefits of Trove Equine CBD products: high anxiety, spooky, distracted, and hypersensitive horses, horses in training, in transit, on stall rest, recovering or rehabbing from injury/surgery, as well as horses that are not competing and would generally benefit from increased calm, focus, and pain relief. We are happy to provide suggested products/dosages/regimens for any specific individuals and situations, and always recommend that you consult your veterinary healthcare professional.
WHY AREN'T TROVE EQUINE PRODUCTS AVAILABLE FOR SALE OR SHIPMENT TO CALIFORNIA?
The California Department of Food and Agriculture has specifically stated that CBD products intended for livestock (including horses) may not be sold or shipped to California. The other state regulatory agencies of California have issued no such directive for people or companion animals. Therefore, all Trove products remain available for sale and shipment to California for use by people and in animals as consistent with regulatory policies. Please let us know if you would like any additional information.
CAN TROVE HELP MY ARTHRITIC HORSE?
We have seen very positive results with Trove Equine CBD products for addressing the inflammation, pain and reduced mobility that often accompanies osteoarthritis and aging. We typically recommend Trove Equine CBD Oil1500 (50 mg CBD per mL) as a versatile and cost-effective way to address inflammation and relieve pain from osteoarthritis in horses. A recommended initial Trove dose would be 1/2dropper of Trove Equine CBD Oil 1500 (25 mg) twice per day, and you could adjust up or down from there based upon your horse's response. This of course may vary depending on age, severity, individual response, performance expectations, and other factors. You may find that your horse responds well to a lower concentration product (Trove Equine CBD Oil 750) or requires a higher concentration product (Trove Equine CBD Capsules 150) for desired results. If you plan on competing with your horse, please note regulations on the use of CBD for horses in competition by relevant horse show governing bodies.
WHAT IS THE CORRECT DOSE OF CBD FOR A HORSE? HOW LONG DOES ONE BOTTLE LAST?
Much like people or dogs, individual horses will respond differently to varying doses of CBD. Therefore, suggested dosages will depend on a variety of factors, including severity of symptoms, whether treating for an acute or chronic condition, and effectiveness of other supportive therapies. Most often, you will be able to assess your horse's response in a very short amount of time, and can choose the appropriate dose that is most advantageous for your horse.
You can refer to the following guidelines for a general dosage recommendation for horses.
Trove Equine CBD Oils/Capsules (daily dose, may be divided AM & PM) :
25-50 mg for anxiety, focus, generalized inflammation and wellness
50-150 mg for acute or chronic pain, inflammation, injury or surgery rehab
150-300 mg for targeted neurological or musculoskeletal impact
Therefore, if you are trying to address anxiety, generalized inflammation and wellness, you could give your horse 12.5- 25 mg (1/4 -1/2 dropper) of the 1500 oil twice daily. At that dosage range, the 30 mL bottle would last 30 - 60 days.
